Official: Zidane Leaves Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane has left Real Madrid with immediate effect, the club confirmed.

The Frenchman departs Los Blancos for a second time after failing to lift any silverware in 2020/21.

“Real Madrid C. F. announces that Zinedine Zidane has decided to bring an end to his current spell as head coach of our club,” reads a statement on the club’s website.

“We must now respect his decision and express our gratitude for his professionalism, dedication and passion over the years and what he means to Real Madrid.

“Zidane is one of Real Madrid’s great icons and his legacy extends beyond what he has achieved as a coach and player at our club.

“He is aware that he has a place in the hearts of the Real Madrid fans and that he will always have a home at Real Madrid.”

Zidane leaves the Spanish giants as their second-most successful coach in history, having lifted 11 trophies during two spells at the Santiago Bernabeu and only Miguel Munoz has more after collecting 14 pieces of silverware in the 1950s.

The 48-year-old will forever be remembered for becoming the first coach to win three successive UEFA Champions League titles.

He claimed nine of his 11 titles during his first stint between 2016 and 2018, before adding another LaLiga and Supercopa de Espana trophy upon his return in 2019.

However, he ended the 2020/21 LaLiga campaign in second place, making it the club’s first trophyless campaign in 11 years.
