Pitso Knocks Downs Out Of CAFCL

Pitso Mosimane has knocked his former side Mamelodi Sundowns out of the CAF Champions League.

Masandawana needed to overcome a 2-0 first-leg defeat but only managed to collect a draw in the second leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Al Ahly were off to the perfect start after Yasser Ibrahim scored from a corner, shocking the home side for being left unmarked in the box.

Downs had their first shot on target in the 20th minute, but Mkhulise’s effort went just past the upright.

Peter Shalulile found himself in a dangerous position inside the box, but his shot was deflected to a corner after 30 minutes. Mosa Lebusa scored the equaliser from the following corner, converting a towering header past Mohamed El Shenawy.

The teams went all square into the break, leaving it all to do for the home side in the second half.

Downs had a dangerous free-kick close to the box in the 50th minute, but Modiba sent it far over the goal.

El Shenawy denied second-half substitute Mauricio Affonso from a tight angle after 55 minutes.

Downs had the ball in the back of the net in the 70th minute but the match official blew for handball by Peter Shalulile when he controlled the ball before finishing past Shenawy.

Lyle Lakay had another chance for Downs, but his shot from outside just went passed the the far post.

Al Ahly had a dangerous counter in the 80th minute but a last-ditch tackle by Lebusa was enough to bring Aliou Dieng off balance as he entered the box.

Motupa had a brilliant chance to score Downs’ second but Shenawy denied the hosts once more. Downs tried to press until the final whistle but were unable to add to the score-line.

Similar to last season, Al Ahly knocked Downs out of the competition at the quarter-final to progress to the last four.
