Pitso’s Al Ahly Return To Winning Ways
Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly returned to winning ways in the Egyptian Premier League, setting up a tasty Cairo derby on Monday.
The CAF Champions League holders struggled over the recent games, only collecting seven of a potential 15 points.
However, they beat fifth-placed Al Ittihad on Thursday evening to stay within touching distance of bitter rivals Zamalek.
Al Ahly dominated proceedings in the first half, but Al Ittihad came close to opening the scoring after 24 minutes when a shot following a short taken corner hit the side netting.
Al Ahly themselves came close after 38 minutes, but Hussein El Shahat’s shot just missed the goal.
The visitors received a penalty two minutes into the second half, with Badr Benoun converting from the spot.
After 52 minutes, the ‘Club of Century’ added to the scoreline thanks to a powerful flying header from Mohamed Magdi Kafsha,
Mosimane’s men thought they had made it 3-0 just 10 minutes later, but another goal by Benoun was ruled out for offside.
Al Ittihad pulled one back in the 92nd minute of the game when a free-kick reached Mohamed El Sabahi, who converted past Mohamed El Shenawy.
The victory sees Al Ahly stay four points behind Zamalek, who beat Smouha 2-1 on Thursday night as well.
Mosimane and his side have now collected 40 points, while Zamalek sit on 44 with the second Cairo derby of the season looming on Monday.
