Pitso Mosimane and Al Ahly have finished the groupstage of the CAF Champions League with a statement win over group winners Simba SC.
The defending champions picked up three points after beating the Tanzanian side, who were still unbeaten and had only conceded one goal so far, 1-0 at home on Friday evening.
Mohamed Sherif came close to opening the score-line for Al Ahly after 22 minutes but his shot from outside the box sailed over the cross bar. Al Ahly had another good chance 10 minutes later but a header by Sherif sailed just wide.
Simba’s goalkeeper was then forced into a stunning safe just before the 30-minute mark after one of his own players had headed a cross dangerously towards his own goal.
Sherif eventually found the opener after converting a cross from close range in the 32nd minute. Al Ahly entered the half-time break with their 1-0 lead following a dominant first 45 minutes.
The ‘Club OG the Century’ continued to dominate proceedings in the second interval, denying Simba of any real scoring opportunities without really leaving second gear.
As a consequence, ‘Jingles’ and his team finish the groupstage with 11 points, two behind Simba.
They will now await the quarter-final draw on 30 April, when they will find out which of the other group winners they will face.
