Serero Adds Trophy Overseas

Bafana Bafana international Thulani Serero added another piece of silverware to his trophy cabinet on Monday evening.

The 31-year-old secured the league title with Al Jazira in the Arabian Gulf League, his first since he joined the club in 2019.

‘Cream’ was a major pillar of the team, featuring in 25 of the 26 league games this season.

Al Jazira were confirmed as league winners on Monday after beating Kharfakkan 3-1, finishing the season on 57 points – three above second-placed Bani Yas.

Serero’s side won their first Arabian Gulf League title since 2016/17, while the South African midfielder claimed his fourth domestic league after already winning the Dutch Eredivisie thrice with Ajax Amsterdam.

He has represented Bafana Bafana 43 times, but it remains to be seen whether new coach Hugo Broos, who said he would revamp the squad and wants more younger players, will recall the School of Excellence and Ajax Cape Town youth product.
