Suarez The Latest To Test Positive For Covid-19

The Uruguayan Football Federation has confirmed that Luis Suarez has become the latest football star to test positive for Covid-19.

Suarez had been set to feature for the South American country in their key World Cup qualifier against Brazil on Wednesday.

Brazil currently lead the round-robin qualifying group, with 9 points in three games. Argentina are second on 7 points, while Ecuador and Uruguay are just behind them on 6 points.

The 33-year-old Atletico Madrid striker will now almost certainly also miss his club’s next scheduled La Liga game, against Suarez’s former team Barcelona. It would have been his first game against his former club.

“Tests have been carried out on all members of the national team, with the result that players Luis Suarez, Rodrigo Munoz and the official Matias Faral, have tested positive for Covid-19,” a statement released by the Uruguayan Football Association read.

Defender Matias Vina had also already been ruled out, having tested positive after Uruguay’s 3-0 win over Colombia last Saturday.

Uruguay will be seeking their first win against Brazil in 19 years, when they host the game in Montevideo.
