Mané Equals Incredible Gerrard Milestone

African superstar Sadio Mané has equalled an incredible milestone for Liverpool that puts him up with club legend Steven Gerrard.

The Senegal international has been in supreme form during the 2021/22 campaign thus far as Liverpool look set to challenge on all fronts.

With four wins in four group stage games in the UEFA Champions League, they booked their place in the last-16 with two games to spare.

And Mané’s goal in the 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening put him level with Gerrard on 21 goals in the competition.

The 29-year-old achieved this feat in 46 games, 27 games fewer than the former captain but remains nine goals off from teammate Mohamed Salah.

The former Southampton winger was hauled off after 45 minutes despite enjoying an incredible game to that point, which head coach Jurgen Klopp explained was due to protecting the player against the physical Atleti side.

“I was not worried that Sadio cannot handle his emotions, he was calm, but the thing is if the ball comes in the air, he challenges and the other player is going down,” he said about his tactical decision, as per the Liverpool Echo.

“We all saw what some Madrid players did, just rolling over more and more in these situations, just to equal the number of players again.”

Mané has scored 105 goals and registered 43 assists in 232 appearances for the Reds since his €41-million switch from the South Coast back in 2016.
