Carnell Not Despondent After First MLS Defeat

St Louis City SC head coach Bradley Carnell has defended his side after losing their first-ever game in Major League Soccer with a 1-0 defeat to Minnesota United.

City started the season like a house on fire winning the first five games of the league and going top of the table. It was a surprise start for the new boys as they scored the most number of goals in the opening six games (15).

Carnell had to face Minnesota at home unfortunately when he was handed his first defeat of the campaign in the Western Conference, the United side had a familiar face Bongokuhle Hlongwane who’s also a Bafana Bafana international.

“We’re not superhuman after all,” Carnell told the MLS official website. “The burning fire was missing early on in the game.

“Maybe it starts weighing on the boys, That’s the nature of the beast right, you’re successful, the boys know at some point this thing has to change, right? It’s just human nature and these boys are not robots and yeah, we’re just human beings after all.”

He continued: “Nothing changed [in] our desire to get better as a team every single day. We lose a game, but yeah, that’s what it is, we lost the game, So next week, we go, the scoreline’s back at zero and we go to Seattle with energy, renewed energy.

“That was the message to the boys out there. I said we’ve arrived in the league, People know about us in the league.

“We’ve been competitive. We are competitive. And we’re not done yet.”
