The South African Football Association (SAFA) has announced the recommendations from their NEC meeting held in Mbombela on Tuesday, stating that Molefi Ntseki was endorsed as the association’s new Technical Director (TD).
If gratified, the former Bafana Bafana coach will replace Walter Steenbok in the position and will be on a four-year contract according to a SAFA statement. Ntseki has already had engagements with FIFA with the football governing set to have agreed to support his programmes.
Another endorsed outcome was of Dr Desiree Ellis being appointed Banyana Banyana head coach on a four-year contract as well. Ellis has been with the former african champions since 2018, having previously sat in the position on an interim basis for two years.
Ellis is the most successful Banyana coach having led the team to African glory in 2022 and the Last 16 round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Ellis and Banyana start the journey for the 2027 World Cup qualification starting against DR Congo this month.
“The SAFA Technical Committee recommended to the NEC that Molefi Ntseki should be appointed as the Association’s Technical Director and Desiree Ellis should be appointed as the coach of the South African senior women’s national team, Banyana Banyana,” read the statement.
“The Technical Committee recommended that they both be appointed on four-year contracts and the NEC endorsed both recommendations.
“Ntseki has already had several engagements with FIFA and the world football governing body has agreed to support his programmes.
“FIFA has appreciated the fact that the South African national teams are doing well with both the SA U17 and the U20 teams participating in FIFA World Cup tournaments this year.”
