It was the end of the road for several Bayhill Premier Cup favourites as the tournament entered the quarter-final stages.
Earlier on Saturday, the group stages drew to a close, and while there had been a few hiccups during the week, most of those that many expected to advance to the knockout stages did, including defending champions Ubuntu Academy and last year’s other finalist, Randburg AFC. PSL clubs Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch, Chippa United, Cape Town City and AmaTuks also progressed.
Ubuntu and Stars of Africa were the only two clubs to win all three of their group games.
In the last 16, Stellenbosch edged past Cape Town City, ending the young Citizens’ hopes, while Antalysapor JPM knocked out Chippa. In the Tshwane battle between Sundowns and AmaTuks, it ended 1-1 in regulation time, and penalties were needed to decide the winner, with Sundowns progressing.
2024 winners Cape Town Spurs beat Shayamoya to make the last eight, as did Randburg over hosts Bayhill United. Stars of Africa made it a run of four wins in a row as they beat SAFA Cape Town, but defending champions Ubuntu’s campaign came to an end as they lost 1-0 to Eagle Performance Academy.
Sunday, the final day at Erica Park before the competition moves to Athlone Stadium, will see both the quarter-finals and semi-finals played.
