Cameroon & Cape Verde Earn Wins To Open AFCON

January 9, 2022

Cameroon and Cape Verde both secured three points in their opening day fixtures of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The hosts buoyed by an incredible opening ceremony and inspirational words from CAF President Patrice Motspe started with a real sense of purpose but were shell-shocked when Burkina Faso opened the scoring.

Gustavo Sangare profited from an inch-perfect delivery from his captain Bertrand Traore to profit from a rather underwhelming moment from Internazionale-bound goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Indomitable Lions keeper, who’s currently on the books of Eredivisie giants AFC Ajax only recently returned to football after serving a one-year doping ban.

And his lack of match fitness was evident as he failed to command his area and inspire confidence in his defence in front of him. But despite the glaring issues, captain Vincent Aboubakar showed all his experience to help them claim three points.

The 2016 AFCON winner netted two penalties after some rash challenges from the Stallions and it was enough to see them enjoy a positive start for their supporters in Olembe.

In the second game, the drama was aplenty as Ethiopia – the first team to arrive in Cameroon for preparation, saw them reduced to ten men when Bayeh Yared received his marching orders for hauling down Julio Tavares.

The veteran forward turned out to be the match-winner as his effort on the brink of the half-time whistle proved to be the only goal of the game.

While the east Africans showed spirit to remain in the game – the sending off was a huge blow to their chances as Group A began as many would have predicted.

Group A results in full:

Cameroon 2-1 Burkina Faso

  • (Aboubakar 40′, 45′) (Sangare 24′)

Cape Verde 1-0 Ethiopia

  • (Tavares 46′)
