Malawi have received a major boost ahead of their crucial clash against Zimbabwe on Friday, with all 28 players testing negative after they only had 15 players available for their group opener.
The Flames lost their opener against Guinea 1-0, but were massively handicapped after six players, including Orlando Pirates Gabadinho Mhango, had tested positive.
In addition, two others were still in Saudi Arabia for their group opener, leading the Football Association Malawi to call-up five reserve players, including Al Hilal forward Gerald Phiri Jnr. Who had initially retired from international football after being cut from the final squad.
However, FAM has confirmed that all 28 players in their squad tested negative ahead of Friday’s match against the Warriors.
“We are delighted that all the players have been cleared,” head of delegation Tiya Somba Banda stated.
”We would like to thank our medical team for their effort and dedication in taking care of the team.
“We now have a full squad and look foward to Thursday’s training which will bring together the whole sqaud for the first time.
“It’s a timely boost so that we have all the players available for the Zimbabwe game which is a must win for us to remain in contention for a place in the knock-out stages.”
Malawi face Zimbabwe at 18:00 on Friday, with both teams needing a win after losing their Group B openers.
