Senegal Suffer Covid Crisis Ahead Of Zim Clash

Senegal have nine players including Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly sidelined with Covid-19 ahead of their clash with Zimbabwe on Monday.

The Teranga Lions will likely only have 17 players available for their clash after six members of their squad haven’t even travelled to Cameroon yet because they tested positive before departure last week Wednesday.

Second-choice goalkeeper Alfred Gomis, Saliou Ciss, Bamba Dieng, Mame Baba Thiam, Pape Matar Sarr and Nampalys Mendy were all not part of the traveling party.

However, the situation even worsened when Mendy, Koulibaly as well as striker Famara Diedhiou also tested positive for the coronavirus and had to go into isolation.

“It’s a difficult and complicated situation,” coach Aliou Cisse said, as per BBC Sport Africa.

“We are going to be competitive and those there are going to play for those who are absent. We are still going into the game against Zimbabwe full of confidence.”

In addition to the Covid cases, Watford’s Ismaila Sarr and Abdoulaye Seck are also not fully fit, leaving the 2019 runner-ups with a fairly depleted squad.

Senegal will meet Zimbabwe at 15:00 today.
