Malawi have made a surprise decision after a Covid-19 outbreak ruled out six players from their 23-man squad for their Africa Cup of Nations opener against Guinea.
Al Hilal forward Gerald Phiri Jnr. who retired from international football upon being cut from the final squad to contest in Cameroon has been recalled alongside the five others who were left as standby options.
Brighton Munthali, Paul Ndlovu, Dan Chimbalanga, Gerald Phiri and Stain Dave are all expected to arrive in Cameroon alongside the former Baroka man on Tuesday.
With 23 players usually allowed to be registered for the tournament, due to the unique circumstances of the pandemic, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) increased the limit to 28 – at the own cost of the respective federation.
However, the five players would only be allowed to feature for the national team in the case of replacing a player who suffered a ‘serious injury’, with Covid-19 not specified as part of that decision.
But CAF has decided to ‘relax’ the rules as per the Malawi FA statement due to the rise of infections experienced at the continental showpiece.
