Broos – Why I Keep Calling Up Chiefs’ Bvuma

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says he’s not left with much option but to call up Bruce Bvuma and has seemingly questioned his lack of game time with Kaizer Chiefs.

Bvuma, 25, has long been touted as the future number one goalkeeper for Chiefs and looked poised to assume the role after several impressive displays towards their historic CAF Champions League final run last season.

But the academy graduate last featured for the club on 12 September in the 2-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns after starting the first three games of the season under Stuart Baxter.

Brandon Petersen and Daniel Akpeyi have since been used while Bvuma has now even fallen out of the matchday squad but remains a regular call-up to the senior South African national team.

“Bruce was already a few times with us and I don’t have complaints about him. He’s working hard in training, he’s a young keeper, for me he’s a quality keeper. But okay, his coach decides differently,” Broos said on SABC Sport.

“I said two weeks ago I checked how many South African keepers are playing, there were three in all the clubs, three South African goalkeepers. Starters, I look for keepers. So, therefore, my confidence stays in Bruce even when he doesn’t play.

“Again, I know, if it goes on like this, one moment, I have to change because yes, maybe tomorrow I need him and then I have a keeper who is not ready to play that game, but for the moment my confidence is in Bruce and he’ll be there for this games.

“We’ll see in the next months because the next match will be in March and we’ll see what happens with him.”

Bvuma has kept eight clean sheets for Amakhosi in 28 games across all competitions since making his first-team debut in April 2017 under former head coach Steve Komphela.
