Baxter Responds To Broos Over Ngcobo Role

November 4, 2021

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has responded to Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insisting that Njabulo Ngcobo’s best role is as defender.

The Bafana Bafana coach had addressed Ngcobo’s role during the announcement of his final 24-man squad, saying he sees him as a defender rather than in midfield after playing him as holding midfielder in the second match against Ethiopia.

The comments, though, seemingly left Baxter disappointed and he insisted he would prefer a more private exchange with the Belgian tactician over the Amakhosi players in the Bafana fold.

“I think it’s unfortunate that we get a discussion about it here, because Hugo could come to the village and make a club visit and we could discuss what we think about players,” Baxter said on Thursday.

“Because we work in the different way than the national coach. I’ve been national coach, so I know. We work in a different way, we see him every day, we him compared to the players, we see the balance within our squad, we see where he can do a job.

“I’d be willingly sit down and have a discussion about that with the national team coach, if he wanted to come to the village but I’ve never seen him, so I have to have that conversation with you (the media).

“I’ve got my own sports science department talking what they do on national camp but I don’t discuss that with the media and I’ve got my opinions about what Bafana do.

“So Hugo is welcome to the village to discuss Njabu Ngcobo and Blom and Keagan and Bruce Bvuma and we can discuss all our candidates for Bafana and I’ll give him my honest opinion.

“But he is the man that picks the team, so if he thinks he’s a defender he picks him as a defender.”
