Broos Names Hlanti Replacement

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has named Tercious Malepe as replacement for the injured S’fiso Hlanti ahead of next week’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Hlanti had to withdraw from the squad after picking up an achilles tendon injury on Thursday, which will keep him sidelined for a long time.

The Kaizer Chiefs defender’s injury was confirmed by Stuart Baxter in the build-up to the Soweto Derby, and the 31-year-old is expected to be out for a few months.

Broos has turned to AmaZulu defender Malepe, who was in the provisional squad but had missed out on the final 24, as Hlanti’s replacement but also lamented Hlanti’s injury.

“Yes, just like with (Mothobi) Mvala, two players I could need for games like Ghana,” he told Bafana’s media department.

“Now they are not there, but there will be others and it’s up to them if they get their chances to take them.”

South Africa take on Zimbabwe on Thursday, 11 November before traveling to Ghana for their crunch qualifier against the Black Stars.
