Broos Not Thinking About Calculator Ahead Of Ghana

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he is not interested in taking out the calculator to find out what South Africa needs in their final 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Ghana on Sunday.

South Africa beat Zimbabwe 1-0 on Thursday evening, which was enough to climb three points ahead of Ghana after the Black Stars drew 1-1 with Ethiopia earlier on Thursday.

The results mean that Bafana will need a win or draw in Ghana on Sunday, while a 1-0 defeat would see Ghana book their spot for the next round.

However, Broos believed that Ghana will need to beat South Africa by three goals to overtake them on the Group G log.

“We are in a very good position, we are three points ahead,” he told SABC after the match.

“I think Ghana has to score three times to be qualified for the next round.

“So we are happy with it.”

Later in the post-match press conference TimesLIVE journalist, Marc Strydom explained that a 1-0 defeat would see Bafana being knocked out, with Broos insisting his team should not focus on the permutations.

“You know we are three points ahead, but we can lose also,” Broos said when asked about the permutations.

Strydom, though, corrected the coach: “No, you can’t (lose) coach. If you lose 1-0 it’s +4 (goal difference for Ghana) and +4 (South Africa), then it’s the goals scored and Ghana would have scored more with a 1-0 win (7 vs 6).”

Broos: “Is there goal difference first?”

Strydom: “Yeah, goal difference would be +4 and +4. If they win 1-0, we go to +4 and they go to +4.”

Broos: “We don’t have to count so much. If you start counting, then it’s finished. You are three points ahead.”
