Broos Reveals Why Xulu Is Not Playing

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed why Siyanda Xulu was not in the squad against Zimbabwe on Thursday.

Xulu had started all four 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers under coach Hugo Broos and helped South Africa to keep three clean sheets.

However, the 29-year-old picked up a knock in training and is not available for tonight’s clash, which has meant Njabulo Ngcobo has dropped back into defence alongside Rushine De Reuck.

“The players know the importance of the game,” Broos told SABC Sport channel.

“We had a few problems with Xulu’s injury, so he’s not ready for today.

“For the rest everyone is 100% is fit and mentally prepared to win the game today.”

Broos also stressed that the Ghana result from earlier doesn’t affect Bafana’s game too much, because they still have to win against the Warriors to have a real advantage in their final Group G clash with Ghana.

“Even with Ghana playing a draw this afternoon, we knew already after the game against Ethiopia that we ha dot win this game against Zimbabwe, so that has not changed,” he added.

“The only thing that has changed now is if we can score a few goals, then it will become more difficult for Ghana. For example if we can score two goals than they have to beat us by three goals, which would make it very, very difficult for them.

“But again, the most important is for us to win.”

“We have to win today. Yes, the other games we had to win also, but this is very important. I’d like to go to Ghana with as much as possible in front of them and three points is a lot.

“Therefor also, maybe we play a bit more offensive than in the other games. The game here against Ethiopia was for us very difficult and I don’t think Zimbabwe is as tricky as Ethiopia but still it is a tricky game.

“Many local player who want to prove something to the coach with AFCON in January and also I heard from my players that Zimbabwean players like to play here in South Africa. So these players want to show clubs in South Africa how good they are.

“Therefor we have to win and certainly not underestimate this opponent.”
