Ex-PSL Star Does Bafana Favour Over Ghana
Former PSL striker and Ethiopia captain Getaneh Kebede handed South Africa a major advantage as they took points off Ghana with a 1-1 draw in their penultimate Group G 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
After a few missed chances at either end and a questionable decision to deny the Black Stars a penalty in the opening 15 minutes, Ayew broke the deadlock with a sumptuous effort after 22 minutes.
The Al-Sadd playmaker curled one past a flailing Teklemariam Shanko and despite the Ethiopians showing resilience to work themselves back into the game – their lack of composure proved the Achilles heel with several spurned chances before the break.
In the second half, the home side, who were playing at Orlando Stadium in South Africa due to their national stadiums being deemed ineligible to host international fixtures by CAF – played with renewed vigour.
And their tireless endeavours were rewarded in the 71st minute when Kebede was played through in on goal to smash one past Joe Wollacott – this just minutes after Shimelis Bekele rattled the post with a long-range effort.
The Black Stars tried, by all means, to get back into the lead and threw the proverbial kitchen sink at the East Africans but in the end, it was two points dropped – leaving Bafana Bafana on the brink of the World Cup playoffs.
South Africa face Zimbabwe at FNB Stadium at 21h00 with a win all but mathematically qualifying them for the next round of the Qatar 2022 qualifications.
