Cape Town City left-back Terrence Mashego feels he was lucky to be included in the Bafana Bafana squad during the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Mashego was included in the Hugo Broos’ team in October and made his debut in their 3-1 win over Ethiopia at Bahir Dar Stadium.

The 23-year-old made four appearances for South Africa and has counted his blessings to be a part of the national team.

“When I got the call-up, to be honest, I was [in] luck because there was no one available in that position,” he told Thabiso Mosia on SA FM.

“I think they used (Nyiko) Mobbie who was the right-back, so I was lucky because there was no one there. So, I had to get the opportunity that I was given. I’d say I was lucky that I didn’t camp on the bench, I went straight to the starting eleven.”

Mashego who won the Nedbank Cup with TS Galaxy while they were campaigning in the GladAfrica Championship went on to discuss what Broos told him when he entered the fold.

“With coach Hugo Broos, what he expects from a left-back is as a defender, you have to do your job, the primary thing is to defend and then going forward is a bonus,” he added.

“So when I went to the national team, the first conversation that we had, he told me that you just have to be solid at the back, you need to defend, then going forward is a bonus, the first thing is you need to defend.”
