Pitso and Pienaar Slam Ghana Penalty Call

Former Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane and ex-captain Steven Pienaar were among those who’ve questioned the penalty decision against South Africa as they were eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

South Africa needed a draw to progress from Group G to the playoffs ahead of Ghana but a dubious penalty decision made by referee Maguette Ndiaye saw Rushine de Reuck cautioned before Andre Ayew slotted home for the only goal of the game.

With South Africa previously having a legitimate Percy Tau goal disallowed for offside against the West Africans in the first game at FNB Stadium – grievances spilt over to social media with Mosimane questioning the calls from both the Bafana clash and the DR Congo matchup where a penalty was awarded against Benin in their 2-0 defeat – while the Squirrels also needed just a point away from home.

“Penalties!! CAF World Cup qualifiers: DRC vs Benin, Ghana vs SA. What’s your take? What is the solution to this challenge? How far in years between UEFA and CAF Football (National teams and Club Football),” he wrote on Twitter.

Mosimane was seemingly pleading for Video Assitant Technology in Africa as he’s mentioned in the past as he calls for a level playing field with European football officiating.
