Bafana Bafana’s hopes of qualifying for the next year’s CHAN suffered a setback when they lost 2-0 to Angola in the first leg of their qualifier in Luanda.
Daniel Kilola opened the score for the hosts in the 13th minute, before Jaredi Teixeira added the second in the 68th minute, with Helman Mkhalele’s hastily assembled squad unable to score an all-important away goal.
The teams will play the second leg next weekend in South Africa, and Bafana will have to overturn the two-goal deficit if they want to qualify for the finals, which will take place in Algeria in January 2023.
Bafana are set to host Angola at the Orlando Stadium next Saturday afternoon.
Having only confirmed their squad on Friday, it is also not clear how many of those who played in the first leg will be available for next week’s second leg.
While CHAN fixtures are officially recognised by FIFA, the games do not fall on FIFA dates, and therefore clubs are not obliged to release players.
