Banyana Banyana booked their place in the next round of the CAF Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers, beating Mozambique 6-0 in their first round second leg encounter at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Banyana had all but booked their spot already, having won the first leg 7-0, to advance 13-0 on aggregate.
As expected, Desiree Ellis’s team took early control of the match, with the coach making five changes to the team that won the first leg.
Banyana were in the lead in the 10th minute when Bambanani Mbane opened the scoring, after being set up by Gabriela Salgado.
Banyana continued to pile on the pressure, but the next goal only came in the 32nd minute with a great individual effort from Linda Motlhalo, who charged down the left flank before cutting into the box, and beating the keeper with a good shot.
Hildah Magaia made it 3-0 in the 40th minute, with Salgado once again assisting.
3-0 at the break, Magaia got her second and Banyana’s fourth in the 53rd minute, heading in from a corner.
Motlhalo, who was playing her 50th international, got her second in the 64th minute, with a simple finish from close range to make it 5-0.
Sibulele Holweni came off the bench to make it 6-0 in the 84th minute, with a nice composed finish.
Banyana are set to face Algeria in the next round in February, with the winners of that tie qualifying for next year’s finals
