Barker – Credit To The Players

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Baker was understandably pleased with his team after they picked up a 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday, a result that sees them go second in the DStv Premiership.

It was a third successive home win for Stellenbosch, who are unbeaten in the league this season.

Barker was pleased with how his team performed, especially in the first half, and praised the players for their commitment this season so far.

“Ja, I thought we started the game well, the whole first 45 minutes, I felt that we controlled the ball, we controlled the match, we created chances, were able to get into our spaces, we were able to get the ball in good areas and ask them questions which led to the goal,” Barker said after the win.

“There were a couple of moments where they sort of on transition looked a little bit dangerous, but didn’t really create much.

“So I thought that credit to the first half, it went to according to plan. Second half, I felt that we just let them have too much time and space on the ball.

“Although they didn’t really create too many chances, they did sort of move us around, and there were moments where I thought, you know, we were under pressure, and more playing on the transition, which we did get transitional moments.

“So it’s just sometimes you just have to have that final pass has to be better, the decision making in the final third needs to be better.

“But ja, a win, three wins in a row at home, nine from nine, second on the log, credit to the players for their continued commitment, the effort, the work rate that they’re putting in, and they’re reaping the rewards there of.”
