Baxter Confirms Which GK Will Start Vs Chippa
Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has confirmed that Daniel Akpeyi will start against Chippa United, saying “there is no real reason for rotation”.
The Englishman has tested all of his four keepers this season already, admitting before 2021/22 that he has four shot stoppers, who could all be the Nr. 1.
However, Akpeyi has started Amakhosi’s last two games, conceding just once and Baxter now explained why he will keep the Nigeria international between the sticks for now.
“At the moment, we have gone through that (period of) he suits that (opponent), he suits this (opponent), who has been good in training,” he said during a press conference when asked by iDiski Times about his goalkeeper rotation.
“We’ve gone through that, we’ve settled a little bit – not that I’m giving Daniel the Nr. 1 but allowing him after a couple of good performances to sort of throw down the marker in a challenge.
“He’s experienced and at the moment the experience, he’s been playing well, he’s been playing for his national team.
“So, not that he has taken the Nr. 1 shirt but I think there’s no real reason to be rotating at this moment.”
Baxter, though, insisted that he hopes Bruce Bvuma (26) and Brandon Petersen (27) will sooner or later give him no other option but start either of them.
“Having said that, the two younger goalkeepers that we have are learning a lot from both Itu and Daniel because they’re the experienced goalkeepers in the club,” he added.
“I’m hoping that the younger ones, at some point, make it impossible to keep them out of the team because that would be the future of the club.
“At the moment, Daniel and Itu are making sure they are great role models and they are not making it easy.”
Chiefs take on Chippa United at 17:30 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
