Benni Laments Slow Starts
AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy says he will take the point after a tough goalless draw against Swallows on Wednesday evening.
It was the first point of the season for McCarthy’s team, after they lost to Mamelodi Sundowns in the opening round of the DStv Premiership last Friday.
AmaZulu, who finished second last season, were also knocked out of the MTN8 by Cape Town City.
McCarthy admits it’s been a tough pre-season for his team, and they are still in the building phase, and so he says he will take the point against a very good Swallows team.
“Tough game, Swallows they won two games, beat Pirates, they beat Royal AM, so ja, so they on a very high,” McCarthy said after the game.
“Their coach got the players that he wanted, and they look fantastic. And ja, for us, we still building, we still finding our feet.
“Some of the new guys are still trying to settle in the team and finding their feet as well, so it wasn’t too bad, but ja, this wasn’t the usual AmaZulu standards.
“Again, started very slow against Cape Town City, we started slowly conceded in the first 15 minutes. Against Sundowns we started also very slow. Today, same thing. So it seems to be like a trend.
“And I know, it’s not been the best pre-season for us, but we can’t afford to let games like this slip away from us. You know, when you get one or two chances, you got to take them, because you’ve got to take these chances. So ja, and I’m afraid I think the creativity in the team has also not been on par.
“Second half, we were much better. We were much better. We moved the ball and we looked like a team that’s looking to win the game, a team that’s looking to press high, a team that’s looking to push for that winning goal. But unfortunately it never came.
“Like I said, we were up against a very good team, a very experienced team. So they also had their moments where they could have probably also gotten a goal here or there. And for us, we the same.
“So I guess when you get a point from such a tough game like this, in your second game, you can’t be too harsh on yourself, you can’t be too disappointed.
“Because a point is better than getting no points and then two losses under your belt.”
