Benni – We Have It In Our Hands
AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy says they will be treating Thursday’s DStv Premiership game against Orlando Pirates as the first of three ‘cup finals’ as they look to finish their season on a high.
Usuthu are second on the log, and a victory against Pirates would almost certainly secure that spot, while the Buccaneers will know any chance they have of catching up to McCarthy’s team, would need them to be victorious.
The former Bucs forward says there has been good preparation, but his team have been inactive for two weeks, while Pirates were playing CAF Confederation Cup football.
“So it’s been a fairly long 16 days since we played Baroka, and the break, so it’s been a bit long, but at least it gave us an opportunity to work on some tactics,” McCarthy told the club’s media department.
“These few days extra that we had to prepare, I would have liked to enjoy it more, if we were able to place on one or two friendly games because some of our opponents, especially the opponents that we playing against, has played two really, really tough competitive matches.
“But listen, happy with the attitude, the mentality from the boys, preparations have been good, so ja, now we just have to put it into a real match when comes Thursday.
“I hope the boys will be fresh, they’ll be ready, they’ll be hungry, because with the next three games, it’s three cup finals for us, you know. The club has been for the first time in this situation that we find ourselves in, but it’s better to be in this situation than to chase.
“So, we have it in our own hands, and it all depends on how serious we are about making a real fight. We know now it’s very much late to challenge Sundowns. But we have to do it for ourselves. We have to do it for our family, for the AmaZulu fans, the faithful.”
“It wasn’t by chance that we played the football that we played and the we won that matches that we won, we’ve worked exceptionally hard, the sacrifices that we made.
“So come Thursday hopefully the boys have the same desire, the same hunger to want to win. But we prepared ourselves nicely, ready for Thursday’s match. So we hope it’s a good encounter, but it’s an encounter that, that will just put our foot further in the stronghold of securing that second place finish.”
