Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos feels the national team has made progress as the looks towards the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Broos took over the hot seat from Molefi Ntseki after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2021 AFCON after losing to Sudan away from home – in a game that they needed one point.
Since taking charge of the national team, the 2017 AFCON winning coach has only lost one game from seven – which proved to be decisive as Ghana advanced to the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs due to their 1-0 win at the Cape Coast Stadium.
However, he’s pleased with the progress of the squad after bringing in several younger players since his first match in charge in September last year.
“We in South Africa started with a young team in September and everybody was asking, oh what are they going to do for the World Cup qualifiers – and we did a very good race but we still have to progress,” he said after the Guinea games.
“But what I see now, that I saw in September is a day and night difference. So we’re progressing and that’s the most important thing, we have some new players, some older players also, because we had a lack of experience in a young team.
“I think we’ve made good choices, this team is progressing, it’s getting better and better – so the goal is June and AFCON next year – we want to be there.”
