Kaizer Chiefs are close to concluding the signing of a former Orlando Pirates and Chippa United player, iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu has learned.
Amakhosi are leaving no stone unturned in assembling a strong and youthful team for next season, with current South African U23 captain Tercious Malepe seemingly the latest addition at Naturena.
The former Pirates and Chippa midfielder recently returned from FK Minaj in Ukraine where he spent 2020/21 after leaving the Chilli Boys last season.
This publication understands that negotiations between Chiefs and Malepe are at an advanced stage, as they aim to conclude the deal before the Olympics.
“The advantage with Tercious is that he can play in three different positions, as a left-centre back he is at home and you can also have him at left-back and is also comfortable as a defensive midfielder,” a source close to the deal told iDiski Times.
“If you remember that’s a position he excelled in when he was at Chippa United. But it’s also the international experience that he comes with and he’s the right age for the Chiefs rebuilding phase.”
The 24-year-old played a total of 15 matches for Minaj in Ukraine this past season and was used in three different positions.
Malepe is well-travelled as a youth international, having represented South Africa at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup as captain, while he was also part of Owen Da Gama’s Olympics team in Brazil in 2016.
Stuart Baxter and Molefi Ntseki are no strangers to the player, having seen him in the U23 side regularly.
iDiski Times understands that Malepe is already the ninth player who could join Chiefs ahead of the 2021/22 season and you can find out about the others in this week’s edition of our newspaper, out in the shops for just R3.50.
