Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung has provided an update on their launch of a women’s team.
With Chiefs mathematically in the race for both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, the need to have a women’s team has become a topic of conversation.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) stated that clubs in Africa will no longer be eligible for inter-club competitions if they do not have a women’s football team under their umbrella.
And Motaung, who secured a role as part of the CAF Organising Committee for Women Football Standing Committee between 2022-2024 says Amakhosi are still in the process of making sure they meet those requirements.
“There’s a lot of work happening behind the scenes – several plans have been put in place, in fact, we even have a meeting this afternoon on some of the issues,” Motaung said in a press conference at the Village on Wednesday.
“The significance hasn’t been lost and we’re taking it very seriously, the club’s position in terms of where it could be and its participation in CAF is also making it very urgent for us and there’s been a lot of work behind the scenes. I can say by the end of this season or the beginning of the new season we’ll definitely have some announcements.”
When asked after the press conference whether Chiefs are considering buying an established women’s team, Motaung remained coy: “We’re looking at all the options, there’s been a lot of research and scenario planning as to which are the best options but I can’t speak to that now. We’re looking at all the options.”
