Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Bernard Parker has tipped the ‘golden generation’ of Egypt to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The two-time AFCON participant feels the Pharoes and Nigeria are amongst the two leading candidates to be crowned the champions of Africa but feels the North Africans will have the edge.
Led by former Bafana Bafana and Real Madrid coach Carlos Quieroz, they endured a less than impressive start with the 1-0 defeat to the Super Eagles – which Parker overlooked when making his decision.
“We need to look at the North African and West African teams, especially Egypt and Nigeria,” he told the club’s media department.
“Nigeria have players who play in strong leagues in Europe and that’s a big plus for them. It will boil down to team chemistry because some of the players are not used to playing as a team.
“Egypt are always favourites because they have the right quality. The golden generation they have needs to lift the trophy. I believe they will use the experience to win it.”
‘Die Hond’ added that he’s also supporting his Amakhosi teammate Daniel Akpeyi, the only representative of the club at the continental showpiece.
“I personally support my teammate, Daniel Akpeyi. I think it’s great for Daniel to add this tournament to his profile. Him being there represents not only Nigeria, but us as Kaizer Chiefs,” he concluded.
