Chippa Get Walkover
In what can be only described as a football farce, today’s scheduled PSL playoff match between Royal AM and Chippa United kicked off with only one team on the pitch.
The match was to be the second game of the round-robin playoffs, after Chippa beat Richards 2-1 in Gqeberha on Saturday.
Royal AM, who have been involved in a legal battle to overturn the decision that saw Sekhukhune United declared GladAfrica Championship winners, and last week got the playoffs suspended as they sought leave to appeal the high court decision. But on Friday that matter was dismissed.
On Wednesday, Royal AM did not honour the fixture although they did make a brief appearance at Chatsworth Stadium before the game.
After arriving at the stadium, however, the club who had earlier insisted they wouldn’t honour the game, packed up and departed 15 minutes before the scheduled kick off.
And so at 3pm, Chippa lined up in the tunnel, and walked onto the pitch without opposition.
There was the obligatory moment of silence, before the referee blew the whistle to start the game, only to follow that immediately with another whistle for the final whistle.
Three more points for Chippa, who move into a six point lead in these playoffs, while Royal AM are continuing their fight off the pitch.
