Comitis – Why We Re-Hired Tinkler
Cape Town City Chairman John Comitis has revealed why he re-appointed former coach Erik Tinkler for a second time.
Tinkler was announced as Jan Olde Riekerink’s successor last week, and will take charge for the last two games of the season.
Comitis was addressing the media at the club’s final press conference of the 2020/2021 season.
Tinkler returned to the club he coached in the 2016/2017 season, and Comitis says they are looking forward to work together again.
“I think it’s clear what we are doing here,” Comitis said at the press conference.
“We’re not happy with average, we’re not happy with being mediocre. It’s been that kind of a season for us. Whilst I thought honestly at the beginning of the season, I probably assembled one of the best group of players in our five year history.
“But things don’t always work out on the pitch as they do on paper. And sometimes the missing link is the person that can switch on the correct switches to get everybody to tick. So we didn’t hesitate when we realized that the season was going to be one of those kind of seasons, to make the changes we needed.
“So Eric Tinkler’s back and Eric’s back for two very clear reasons. Because we’re an ambitious club. And we know what to expect from Eric, his work ethic, and certainly his ability to work with South African players of different cultures, as we do have a very diverse squad, and club, which is an asset, to be honest.
“So that’s been the first change, we’ve already gone into the market to look for additional reinforcements in certain positions, we’ve probably achieved two of the three targets that we chasing, and one still to come. And that will kind of unfold over the next couple of weeks.”
