Dolphins Through To ABC Playoffs
Dolphins FC grabbed the second last spot at the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs after their narrow 1-0 win over Magesi FC in the Limpopo decider on Wednesday.
Masemola Mmahloso scored the sole goal in the 74th minute at the old Peter Mokaba stadium.
The Limpopo champions join Umvoti United (Kwa-Zulu Natal), Hungry Lions (Northern Cape), Mangaung United (Free State), FC Sivutsa (Mpumalanga), Platinum City Rovers (North West), BCM Stars (Eastern Cape) and Glendene United (Western Cape), while Gauteng is yet to produce a winner.
Dolphins coach Phuti Moafe says he is overwhelmed.
“As a team we went through a lot, we just motivated them. I am overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed because I think we need to be the first group of Dolphins to make and break the records,” he said.
“The last time they went to the playoffs they finished in the semi-finals. So we just need to go all out to the GladAfrica (Championship). They deserve it, they fought well, they were smart because at some point during the last five minutes we were under siege but we defended well.”
The playoffs have been scheduled for 28 June until 3 July 2021 in Mpumalanga. Moafe knows he doesn’t have much time to prepare. The former Polokwane City Assistant coach believes the period spent in arbitration fighting for their position was also beneficial as his charges maintained training.
“What I can say to you is this saga, this case that was over our shoulders I think it gave us enough time to prepare. Even though we were preparing for Magesi now we have to prepare for the main one and time is not on our side but yes for what we have practiced for what we have been doing here we will take it from here up to the playoffs,” added the coach.
The game in Polokwane kicked off 21 minutes late owing to Dolphins being late for the pre-match activities which led to match officials checking player cards while they lined up to walk on to the pitch. The match officials team didn’t have a fourth official leaving one assistant referee to do double duties.
