Barker Sets Stellies Target Ahead Of AmaZulu Clash

As the DStv Premiership resume this weekend, Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has explained the targets of the team for the rest of the season.

Barker also given an update on players who will be returning from injuries, before explaining that his boys have more confidence and looking to continue with the momentum.

Stellenbosch have played eight games in the league and haven’t lost any match, winning five and drawn five so far.

“I think as a football club, we are very happy with the start that we’ve had, obviously to be second on the log with 20 points after 10 matches is really positive for us. And we do aim to continue with the form that we have,” Barker told the club’s media department.

“And, you know there’s no easy game in the PSL to have gone ten games unbeaten is something that we’re really proud of and want to continue, we do have difficult games coming up, we do have a block of fixtures where we play eight matches in 32 games.

“So our resilience, the depth of the squad, the quality of the squad will be tested in this period, but at the same time there is a belief, and there’s a confidence among the players. And, there’s a level of commitment from everyone at the club to continue the good run that we’re on.”

Barker also insisted that his side’s targets have remained the same with the first and most important being to secure enough points to avoid relegation.

“So, I think as a football club, we always set ourselves a target, and we want to reach the first target as quickly as possible, and that remains getting to 30 points. And then thereafter we’ll reassess, and then the next target would be to push and hopefully secure top eight position,” he added.

“And, if we can achieve that and get to 40 points with matches in hand, and obviously, we will reassess, but we want to avoid getting ahead of ourselves, we’ve just got to stay focused, stay committed, and stay humble, in what we are achieving.

“We just got to continue working each and every day, on the training ground, to keep improving the squad in terms of the way we play, etc. And also players like Robin Johannes, Antonio Van Wyk and Granwald Scott are coming back at just at the right time, from some long-term injuries, they’re back in full training, and they will be available for this difficult period of fixtures that are coming up, where we generally sort of play almost every four matches.”

Stellenbosch host AmaZulu at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday at 15:30.
