Baxter Gives Update On His Own Injury & Five Chiefs Players

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has had some bad news on the injury front after even picking up a serious injury himself and with five of his players still being sidelined as well.

Amakhosi have been without the likes of Samir Nurkovic and Leonardo Castro, who had to undergo operations, but while the former is still far away from a return, Castro has at least started training again.

In addition, Lebogang Manyama and Siyabonga Ngezana are also still sidelined, while S’fiso Hlanti has joined the treatment table after picking up a serious achilles injury in training on Thursday.

“We’ve got most of our players at least back in training,” Baxter told reporters.

“Samir (Nurkovic) is the only one who is not, he’s got a long way ahead of him.

“Leo Castro is back in training without being available. Lebo (Manyama), Siya (Ngezana), those are the ones I can think of now.

“S’fiso Hlanti added to that list, so they’re all possible big hitters, they’re all front-line troops, a wealth of experience ready to come back.

“I hope we can get them back quickly, but as Mandla (Ncikazi) said, you get on with it anyway and some good things have already come from it, so we just keep on playing with the players that we have.”

Baxter also opened up about his own injury after appearing to the press conference with a moon boot himself.

“My injury is ok, it was a fracture and it turned into a tear, a torn tendon,” he explained.

“It’s painful, but it is what it is. Other coaches had to sit on the bench with a moon boot on, so I’ll get by.

“I’m more concerned about the players.”

Chiefs take on arch rivals Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s Soweto derby at 15:30 at the FNB Stadium.
