Baxter On The Derby – I Love The Knife At The Throat

Ahead of Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, coach Stuart Baxter has opened up on his his first experience of the derby.

The Englishman insisted that it was not easy to be in-charge until he experienced everything in his first stint.

Chiefs welcome the Buccaneers at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 15:30.

“My first experience at the derby was I watched one when I was the Bafana coach first time around, and it was incredible, an incredible experience. I wasn’t involved in it at that time,” Baxter told reporters.

“Then, when I was at Chiefs the first time round, my first derby was intimidating, it’s exciting, but I think it’s very, very special in as much as it lives such a life, you don’t really know that until you’ve experienced it.

“And I think it will be different now to having 94,000 people in the stadium, I think there’s going to be different challenges, there’s going to be different things that you got to look at.

“But for a coach, as a coach, as a professional athlete, I love it, I love the knife at the throat. I love living like that. So, you know, you make mistakes in the bench, you’ve lost the game, disaster.

“You do something from the bench that changes the game, you love it. Now, I just love the whole thing. If you’re a professional sportsman then you want to play at the highest level, and you want the most important games, you don’t want to play an unimportant game.

“If you do, then sorry I’m not one of those, I like these big games, I love testing myself and the players. And obviously Mandla loves it as well. Would we change it, would be go and send someone else today so to sit here, no chance.”
