Bucs Coach Praises Peprah

Orlando Pirates co-caretaker coach Fadlu Davids has praised new forward Kwame Peprah after his starting XI debut for the Buccaneers in the Soweto Derby.

The 20-year-old, who is yet to score for the Buccaneers, made his fifth appearance since joining but it was the first time he was named in their starting line-up.

Davids explained that their performance showed they got their selection right and praised Peprah for his display despite the 2-1 defeat to their city rivals.

“The selection really showed in terms of our dominance, how we were on top, we were controlling the game from start to finish,” he told reporters.

“It really is about putting the best players on the pitch where they can produce their skills in creating chances, in really unlocking the opponents’ defence.

“I think Peprah did really well in his first start for the club, really unsettling the defence of Kaizer Chiefs, really in terms of his movement, in terms of his power that he has upfront and in terms of focal points, really to give us these moments that he to unlock the defence line.”

Davids also revealed that his side will try to work on their finishing during the FIFA break because they need to start turning their dominant displays into more goals.

“We’re always working, trying to improve. This gives us an opportunity – turn this dominance into goals,” he added.

“We are creating the chances but really to put the ball in the back of the net.

“Defensively, really we have been good, not conceding many shots on target. In the previous two games it was zero on target, I’m not really sure the stats of this game but I don’t think Mpontshane had a save to make.

“That’s the one part in terms of fixing the football problems, but the thinking of the players in terms of being concentrated, when you do have the ball, have more possession than the opponent, you always have to think next phase.

“When you’re in possession when you’re trying to create these chances, it always leaves you vulnerable for counter-attacks and that’s definitely something when we’re in possession, can we counter-press, can we stop the counter attack?

“Of course the main thing is when you have the dominance when you have the ball and that’s one of our main focuses in this FIFA break.”

Pirates fell to seventh place on the log and will face Golden Arrows after the international break.
