Cardoso Ready To Face Chiefs’ ‘Hoodoo Team’

Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso says Amakhosi are ready to face their ‘hoodoo team’ in the DStv Premiership this weekend.

With the domestic league resuming this weekend after a two-week international break, Cardoso has previewed Amakhosi’s clash against Martizburg United.

The 33-year-old has also admitted that the international break came at the wrong time for Chiefs just after a win in the Soweto Derby but they will try to carry that momentum into their next game.

“Preparations have been good during the FIFA break, it gave us some time to work up and tighten up the loose screws,” he told Chiefs media department.

“Ten days, good training. It’s just unfortunate that not all our players have been there, they have been in the national team duty, but they have joined us now in the last few days to sort everything out.

“Obviously, coming of a win going into a FIFA break is the best scenario, you’re still carrying your momentum, but we shouldn’t let that get to us.

“I think we can take this FIFA break as a positive to get the mountains ready, especially after the big derby win. The derby win gave us quite a bit of confidence boost, even though we scored in the last minute. I mean, it’s the three points that counts at the end of the day, so we are very happy about that.”

Cardoso also spoke about facing Chiefs’ ‘hoodoo team’, with the Glamour Boys only collecting one win at Maritzburg United since 2009, as well as facing former Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp.

“Maritzburg United is a very tricky game, and playing them at Harry Gwala,” he added.

“It’s unfortunate that you don’t have a crowd behind us, especially in such a stadium the fans are right on top of the pitch. So it’s not the best feeling, but hopefully the fans will be back inside the stadium very soon, and it will be a positive for us.

“Maritzburg have always been a ‘hoodoo team’ for us. We just haven’t got one up on them. But I think we’ve got a solid team now. We started to bad luck, as you have seen but we are starting to gel together nicely. So hopefully, we can take all of those positives into this game coming up.

“Always tricky going up against the ex-coach of us. Working with Ernst (Middendorp), Ernst is a very, very good coach. he is very good tactically.

“And I mean we almost won the league with Mr. Middendorp, so it’s going to be a tough one. He knows all the ins and outs, especially the players who have been there for quite some time.

“So, it’s going to be a very good game. Maritzburg has improved drastically, and I’m happy to see that they are doing well under him.”

Chiefs travel to KwaZulu-Natal to face the Team of Choice on Sunday at Harry Gwala Stadium at 17:30.
