CAS Dismiss Royal AM Case

April 20, 2022

The Court of Arbitration for Sports in Switzerland has dismissed Royal AM’s case where they were seeking to be declared the lawful winners of the 2020/2021 GladAfrica Championship.

Prior to buying Bloemfontein Celtic’s DStv Premiership status, AM had sought to be declared the rightful champions, after they lost out on the league to Sekhuhkune United, following a PSL DC decision to award Sekhukhune three points for a fixture against Polokwane City. City had failed to have the correct number of under-23 players in their squad.

This led to Royal AM dropping to second, and the KZN team even went as far as boycotting the playoffs as they felt they had been hard done by.

Despite buying the top-flight status, AM had continued the fight, and taken the matter to CAS.

However, CAS has now dismissed the case, as they did not have the jurisdiction to hear the appeal.

The document read, “The Court of Arbitration for Sport rules that:

“1. CAS has no jurisdiction to hear the appeal filed by Royal AM Football Club on 7 September 2021.

“2. The costs of the arbitration, to be determined and served to the parties by the CAS Court Office, shall be borne by Royal AM Football Club.

“3. Royal AM Football Club shall pay to the National Soccer League and Sekhkhune United FC a contribution of CHF 4.000 (four thousand Swiss Francs) each towards the legal fees and other expenses incurred in connection with the present arbitration procedure. All other Parties shall bear their own expenses.”
