Ex-Pirates and Ajax Star Retires

Former Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates midfielder Clifford Ngobeni has officially retired from professional football.

Ngobeni, 34, last represented the University of Pretoria, where he was club captain and ends his career after 16 years in the game.

Once touted as the future of South African football, the technically gifted midfielder was invited for training stints at Ajax Amsterdam due to the incredible potential he displayed whilst at Ikamva.

But after five years with the Urban Warriors first-team, he made a lucrative switch to the Soweto giants where injuries curtailed his meteoric rise. Despite that, he was part of the iconic Pirates squad that won two domestic trebles.

“We wish our former Captain Clifford Ngobeni all the best as he takes up his new role as the Ambassador for Sport at the Academique Learning and Sports Academy in Bronkhorstspruit, Tshwane,” Tuks confirmed in an official statement.

Ngobeni also represented Golden Arrows and the now-defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces during his career.
