Mngqithi Happy With Downs Victory
Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has commented to his side’s win over Marumo Gallants.
Masandawana beat Bahlabane Ba Ntwa 4-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon to strengthen their lead on top of the DStv Premiership table.
Mngqithi admitted that it was a difficult match, but said they knew how to overcome Gallants, more especially after scoring the second goal.
“To be honest, there’s a lot of positives. Another clean sheet, very important for us, four goals, a very good outcome. But we were a little bit creative, because we have got a deficit of probably one or two more goals,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV after match.
“But we still have one more game in this circle, because the last circle we scored less than what we wanted to score. But the number of clean sheets already achieved in this circle. So the players are really working very hard, the spirit is looking good in the group, everybody is putting a shoulder in what we are trying to do. And a very good attitude.
“One is always worried when we play a team that everybody thinks you are going to win easily against them. And those games require a little bit more in terms of intrinsic motivation, where the willpower to try and say we want to dominate and if possible, those are the games you want to score as many goals as possible, but the truth of the matter is, it was not as easy as people would think. But the moment we scored the goal, I knew we’ve got a chance of scoring.”
Mngqithi also revealed that Gallants’ more attacking approach opened them up at the back, which the log leaders; attacking players managed to exploit.
“The scary part was more their high press. It destabilized us a little bit, and it forced us into many long balls. And immediately we managed to find a double wide with most on the opposite side, then it created a little bit more problems for them on our left channel,” he added.
“But truth be told the second half they put up a better fight. But they also took too many risks they were wild open behind and that is why we knew with a few balls behind their defense we might be able to get something and no wonder when we got those chances we managed to bury them because in as much as they were putting a lot of numbers in our half more especially in our defensive bet.
“But they were leaving in one against ones at the back against their centre-backs and one against one with so much space between Peter and Pavol means the centre-backs were stretched, we should ultimately give a little bit more freedom and space from Mshishi for Neo Maema to be able to play in that creative zone.
“And it was always important for us to have those multiple lines to make sure that whenever we engage them in the man marking game because Mshishi was followed everywhere by Khumalo, So it had to bring a player like Pitso into the game and AJ to the game to open them up.
“But they gave a good account of themselves and believe me, everybody might think they are a very bad team because of where they are. But they’re still going to beat someone very respectable, and you will say I told you.”
The DStv Premiership reigning champions kept their unbeaten record, having won eight and drawn one in nine games so far, while now going over 1 000 minutes without conceding a goal.
