Despite winning two titles with Mamelodi Sundowns in a space of five months, Erwin Saavedra has said he wished he was not injured as much

Saavedra joined Sundowns in January from Bolivar La Paz of Bolivia in a two-year deal, but the 26-year-old suffered an injury setback before making his mark in the South African topflight football.

He only managed to make four appearances for the 12-time league champions, coming in as a substitute on two occasions and making the starting line-up just twice.

The Bolivian feels this isn’t the best way to win the trophies but admitted the two trophies, the Nedbank Cup and DStv Premiership, will be good for his CV.

“First of all, it was a different experience from what I am used to. However, to win two trophies is great even though I got them not in the way I would have preferred since I was injured. [As a footballer] these are titles which will forever be part of my CV,” he told Sundowns media.

Meanwhile, Saavedra said had never experienced injuries like this before, but praised Masandawana’s co-coaches for motivating him and believing in him while he was injured.

“The coaches told me that injuries are part of football, and to me, this is part of football I have never experienced before and it is new to me.”

The Sundowns midfielder also believes that they can achieve what they couldn’t achieve as a team in the coming campaign of 2022/23. Even though they won every trophy domestically Masandawana still wants the ‘big fish’ which is TotalEnergies CAF Champions League following the quarter-final exit where they got eliminated by Angolan giants Petro de Luanda

“I am only hoping to start the next season in the best manner possible, together we can achieve new objectives that we didn’t get to achieve this season.”
