Stellenbosch have confirmed they have tied Deano Van Rooyen down to a long term contract at the DStv Premiership club.

Van Rooyen, who had an excellent 2021 on the field, is born and bred in Stellenbosch, and his strong performances in the right wing back role saw him garner a lot of attention.

Van Rooyen began his career as an attacking midfielder but last season he was converted to his new defensive role, and the 25-year-old has excelled since the change.

While Van Rooyen made his debut for Stellenbosch back in the 2016/2017 season, when the club was still in the National First Division, he became a first regular from around 2018.

He and his cousin Ashley Du Preez were two of the first local players at the club, and in an interview last month with iDiski Times, Van Rooyen spoke about how proud he was to have been at the club since its inception.

“I am very proud that I could be one of the few players starting the new journey with the Stellenbosch Football Club from the beginning,” Van Rooyen told iDiski Times.

“I have a responsibility to show our young upcoming youngsters that it is not impossible to make it to the top, obviously they must learn early to adaption while they are in the development phase, and also and always be willing to be coachable at all times.”
