Sundowns To Make Decision On Hlompho

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena says the club are set to make an announcement on the future of club legend Hlompho Kekana.

Kekana joined the club a decade ago from Bloemfontein Celtic and has lifted 12 trophies, including six league winners medals, the CAF Champions League and Super Cup.

However, the 36-year-old midfielder last featured for the club in their final league game last season while he took to social media in August to bid farewell.

“Today marks the 10th anniversary of me signing with Mamelodi Sundowns. In 2011, the opportunity to play for this team was one I couldn’t let pass me by,” Kekana wrote.

“This past decade has reminded me what is meant by ‘the sky is the limit’ and the success on the field is something that as a little boy, playing soccer on the streets of ZB [Zebediela], I could only dream of.”

There was talk of a potential move to Swallows FC and while the club has yet to confirm their stance of their captain whose contract expires in June 2024 – Mokwena says it will happen in due course.

“I think the club will issue out a statement, there are good plans. This is a very good club that treats its people very well,” he said after the game.

“Hlompho is no different, he deserves the respect this club is giving him. I think… I don’t want to say too much but let’s wait for the club to issue a formal statement.”

Kekana represented Masandawana 339 times, scoring 38 goals and registering 22 assists over his glittering career.
