End Of The Road For Chiefs
It’s the end of the road for Bizana Pondo Chiefs, as the mid-week GladAfrica Championship results confirmed their relegation back to the ABC Motsepe leagues.
Chiefs had only been promoted at the start of the season, but when they lost 3-2 at home to Cape Town All Stars on Wednesday, it ended their time in the professional leagues. Chiefs can now finish no higher than 15th, and with 15th and 16th both going down, it means their season is all but over. All Stars moved up to 13th with the win.
Meanwhile at the top of the table Richards Bay missed a chance to move further up the table, after they lost 1-0 to TS Sporting, who climb to third and just two points off the lead with the win.
Royal AM, who played on Tuesday, could only draw 1-1 away to 14th-placed Cape Town Spurs, missing a chance to go top. Royal AM are second, one point behind Richards Bay, and one ahead of TS Sporting.
Sekhukhune United moved to fourth as they beat 10th-placed Pretoria Callies 2-1, while Cape United are now fifth, following their 1-0 win over 11th-placed Polokwane City.
JDR Stars are sixth, after they beat ninth-placed Jomo Cosmos 2-1 on Tuesday.
There are just five points separating the top six teams.
Free State Stars are seventh, they drew 1-1 with 15th-placed Steenberg United, who are in the relegation spot two points behind Spurs and five points behind All Stars and 12th-placed AmaTuks.
AmaTuks lost 1-0 to Uthongathi, who moved to eighth with that victory.
Despite just three rounds left to play, and apart from Chiefs’ relegation, the only other things we can confirm is that AmaTuks, All Stars, Spurs and Steenberg can now not mathematically reach the playoffs, and mathematically the current top eight teams can not be relegated.
