Official: Jomo Cosmos Relegated

Jomo Cosmos have been relegated to the ABC Motsepe League after 39 years in pro football.

The Ezenkosi had minimal hopes of surviving in the GladAfrica Championship this season but a draw against 15-th placed TS Sporting sealed the fate of the famous side.

As a consequence, Cosmos cannot catch 14th-placed TTM, who sit on 31 points. Jomo Sono’s men only have two games left to play but are sitting nine points behind TTM.

Cosmos spent 12 seasons in the PSL before getting relegated for the very first time in 2007/08 season when they finished 16th on the log. Ezenkosi made an immediate return to the top-flight football in the 2008/09 season after winning the National First Division (NFD).

However, the team of the legendary Jomo Sono were never stable in the league since then even though the club continued to produce top-class players in the country, also going out of South Africa to uncover talent.

Sono’s squad last played top-flight football in the 2015/16 season but since then they haven’t returned to the elite level in South African football.

‘The Black Prince’ as he is famously known has produced the likes of Pitso Mosimane, Phil Masinga, Mark Fish, Morgan Gould, Dikgang Mabalane, Anthony Laffor, and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, to name just a few. Letsholonyane, went on to represent Bafana Bafana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and become a club legend at Kaizer Chiefs.

In the other two games, Pretoria Callies collected an important 2-0 win over Polokwane, while TUKS beat Venda Football Academy 1-0 to climb into second spot.
