Siyabulela Gwambi says that Chippa United have a chance to make history if they can reach the Nedbank Cup final for the first time, but they are not taking their semi-final opponents, Pretoria Callies, lightly.
The interim Chippa coach was speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend’s game against their GladAfrica Championship opponents.
Gwambi says the players have shown focus and it makes the technical team feel confident going into the game.
It is also an opportunity for Chippa to build some momentum, as the team are currently battling it out in 15th place in the DStv Premiership.
“You know, when you talk about our preparations, the message is clear that our intention is really to get to the final,” Gwambi said at the official pre-match press conference.
“And here we are represented with an opportunity to get to the final for the first time in the history of this club.”
“Looking at the boys how they are responding, it energizes us as a technical team to see. They are focussed, and you must remember, we only started as a new technical team only last week, but what we see, the response from the players is very much pleasing.”
“Everything that we do, we do with intention, the more we get a response from the players and reach our objectives, it makes life easy, because now you’ve got people that are taking responsibility, that nothing must always come from the coach.”
“And also they must also take ownership of the game itself. So the message is clear. We are not going to undermine the opponent because they are playing in the GladAfrica Championship.”
“We know that we’ve got a heavy responsibility going to play away for the first time in the cup, but be that it may we’ve played at that stadium before. ja, so those are my thoughts so far.”
