A relieved Gavin Hunt says that Samir Nurkovic’s presence made a huge difference as Kaizer Chiefs picked up their second DStv Premiership win of the season.
Hunt was speaking to Chiefs’ media after their 1-0 win in Durban against AmaZulu.
Nurkovic scored the winning goal for the Amakhosi in a hard-fought battle against Benni McCarthy’s team.
Hunt says Nurkovic made a huge difference, and he was also pleased with the defensive shape by his team.
“You know we worked on a shape before we came here, to try and nullify them a little bit, they’ve got some good players, they’ve invested in their team heavily upfront,” Hunt said after the game.
“And I knew their wide players, and they’re dangerous, but I thought that’s how you’re supposed to defend – I thought in the first half they got behind us once or twice, but we had some really good chances. I thought Samir, who hadn’t played 90 minutes, was fantastic, I didn’t want to play him, but I’ve only got one striker available, so that’s a problem.”
“Right now for us, any win is a big win. We should’ve won a few more games, you know, but the point table doesn’t lie, so we’ve been poor defensively.”
“As I said from the start, if you get a guy like Samir playing in your team every week, it’s like what happened last year, he played all those ten first games and he was brilliant, he scored all your goals. And he got half a chance, and we haven’t had that.”
